Our History
Founded in 1979, Northern Sand & Gravel was born from the dedication and vision of a hardworking family who saw potential in a sand, gravel, and concrete company in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. With family by their side, they took on the challenge of building upon the company’s foundation, turning it into a trusted local business.
Through their hard work, determination, and by the grace of God, they grew Northern Sand & Gravel into a cornerstone of the community, delivering concrete and materials during a time when the local economy was struggling after the departure of the U.S. Air Force base in Kinross.
Expansion and Growth
As Sault Ste. Marie began to thrive, so did Northern Sand & Gravel. We are more grateful than ever for the opportunities we’ve had to expand, with a new batch plant in Newberry. Today, we proudly deliver high-quality concrete and aggregate to communities across the region.
Our commitment to supporting local projects and contributing to community development has always been at the heart of what we do. We believe in building a stronger future, one project at a time, and ensuring that our growth aligns with the needs and aspirations of our neighbors.
At Northern Sand & Gravel, we also strive to provide stable, year-round employment for our team. By opening our innovative store, offering safety gear, apparel, and equipment, we aim to keep people working even when construction slows during the winter months.
We owe much of our success to our incredible team. Many have been with us since the beginning, and our ready-mix drivers are among the best in the country. One of our own was awarded the prestigious NRMCA National Driver of the Year Award in 2022.
